What is an ECG and what does it measure?
An ECG records the tiny electrical signals that make your heart beat. Each heartbeat starts as an electrical impulse, and the electrodes placed on your chest, arms and legs pick up these signals from different angles. The machine prints or displays them as a series of waves.
From this trace a doctor can read your heart rate, whether the rhythm is regular, whether the chambers are enlarged or strained, and whether there are signs of a current or previous reduction in blood supply to the heart muscle. It does not use any radiation and nothing is injected.
What an ECG can detect
An ECG helps a doctor look for several heart problems, including:
- Arrhythmias – an irregular, too-fast or too-slow heartbeat, such as atrial fibrillation
- Ischaemia or a heart attack – reduced blood flow to the heart muscle, either ongoing or in the past
- Heart enlargement or strain – for example from long-standing high blood pressure

How to prepare and what to expect
A resting ECG needs little preparation. You will lie down and the staff will attach electrodes to your chest, arms and legs – men may have a small patch of chest hair shaved so the stickers adhere. You stay still and breathe normally for a few minutes while the recording is taken. It is completely painless and you can resume normal activity straight away.
For an exercise stress ECG, wear comfortable clothes and shoes and follow any instructions about eating or medicines beforehand. For a Holter monitor, you wear a small recorder and keep a diary of your symptoms; avoid getting the device wet. Always tell the team about any medicines you take, as some affect the heart rhythm.
What your results mean
Results are usually described as normal or showing specific changes. A normal ECG means the rhythm and electrical pattern looked typical at the moment of recording. An abnormal ECG can point to an arrhythmia, signs of strain, or changes that suggest reduced blood flow – but it must be read alongside your symptoms, history and sometimes further tests such as an echocardiogram or blood tests.
It is important to know that a normal resting ECG does not fully exclude heart disease, and minor variations can be harmless. Always have the trace interpreted by a doctor rather than relying on a wearable device reading alone.

As a general guide only, a simple resting ECG in the private sector typically falls in a market range of roughly tens of dollars when done as part of a consultation, while a polyclinic charge is usually lower. An exercise stress ECG and a Holter monitor cost more because they involve specialist equipment and reporting, commonly running into the low hundreds of dollars.

When to see a cardiologist
See a doctor and ask whether you need an ECG if you have palpitations, unexplained breathlessness, dizziness, fainting, or a known family history of heart disease. Your GP can perform or arrange an ECG and refer you to a heart specialist if needed.
Call 995 or go to A&E immediately if you have central chest pain or tightness, especially spreading to the arm, jaw or back, with sweating, nausea or breathlessness, or if someone collapses – these can be signs of a heart attack and need emergency care.
