What a gynae-oncologist covers
Gynaecologic oncology is the care of cancers of the female reproductive organs — the ovaries, womb (endometrium), cervix, vulva and vagina. A gynae-oncologist diagnoses and stages these cancers, performs complex cancer surgery (including minimally invasive and robotic surgery), and coordinates chemotherapy, radiotherapy and follow-up within a multidisciplinary team. They also manage pre-cancerous changes and assess women at higher genetic risk, for example those with a family history or a BRCA gene change.
What to expect at a consultation
A first visit usually starts with your history and symptoms, followed by an examination and, where relevant, investigations such as an ultrasound scan, blood tests or a bladder assessment. The gynae-oncologist will explain what they find, set out the options with their benefits, risks and typical costs, and answer your questions so you can decide without pressure.
Preparing for your appointment
Bring a list of your medicines and medical conditions, any recent scans, biopsy or screening results and referral letters, and note down your main concerns and questions. When am I referred to a gynae-oncologist?
Usually after a suspicious scan, an abnormal biopsy or Pap smear, a confirmed gynaecological cancer, or a strong family history of ovarian or womb cancer. A GP, gynaecologist or screening service directs the referral.
What is the difference between a gynaecologist and a gynae-oncologist?
A general gynaecologist manages a broad range of women’s health conditions; a gynae-oncologist has further sub-specialty training in gynaecological cancers and their complex surgery, and leads cancer care within a multidisciplinary team.
Is gynaecological cancer surgery done by keyhole?
Often, yes — many procedures are performed laparoscopically or with robotic assistance, which can mean smaller wounds and quicker recovery in suitable cases. Whether it is appropriate depends on the cancer and your situation.
