It is worth booking a gynaecologist directly if you have persistent abnormal bleeding, pelvic or period pain that disrupts daily life, a pelvic lump, recurrent miscarriage, difficulty conceiving after trying for a year (or six months if you are over 35), or symptoms of prolapse or urinary leakage.

What to look for when choosing a gynaecologist

Start with credentials. Confirm the doctor is registered with the Singapore Medical Council and appears on its Register of Specialists for Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Beyond that baseline, the most useful filter is sub-specialty fit: a general obstetrician suits routine pregnancy and antenatal care, while high-risk pregnancies are better served by a maternal-fetal specialist, fibroids or endometriosis by a minimally-invasive surgeon, and incontinence or prolapse by a urogynaecologist.

• Hospital affiliation and where the doctor admits or operates — relevant for delivery, surgery and emergencies.

Public vs private gynaecology care

Public restructured hospitals and their O&G departments offer subsidised care, usually accessed through a GP or polyclinic referral, with the trade-off that you may not choose your individual doctor.
