What an O&G specialist treats and when to see one

Obstetrics and gynaecology covers the full range of women’s reproductive health — routine cervical and well-woman screening, period problems, ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, contraception, menopause, and pregnancy from antenatal care through delivery. It is worth booking a review for symptoms such as heavy or very painful periods, bleeding between periods or after menopause, persistent pelvic pain, or any concern in pregnancy, as well as for age-appropriate screening even when you feel well.

What to look for when choosing a gynaecologist in Singapore

Check that the doctor is registered with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) and listed on the Register of Specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology. For a specific need — high-risk obstetrics, fertility, urogynaecology or gynaecological oncology — look for relevant subspecialty experience and an affiliation with a hospital that has the right facilities. Continuity of care matters in pregnancy, so ask who will see you at follow-ups and who provides cover for your delivery.

Public vs private, and costs

Care is available through public hospitals and polyclinics, often with a referral, or directly through private clinics that offer more scheduling flexibility. Subsidised screening may be available to eligible residents, and MediSave can be used towards certain approved procedures and parts of pregnancy and delivery costs, within set limits; purely cosmetic or elective services are generally not claimable. Confirm current fees and what your insurance or MediSave covers before proceeding.
