What refractive surgery treats and who it suits
LASIK and related procedures such as ReLEx SMILE, surface ablation (including TransPRK) and implantable lenses (ICL) aim to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses by correcting short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism. Suitable candidates are usually adults with a stable spectacle prescription, healthy corneas of adequate thickness and no significant eye disease. Not everyone is suitable, so an honest candidacy assessment is the most important part of the process.
How to choose a LASIK clinic in Singapore
- Confirm the surgeon is registered with the Singapore Medical Council and is on the Register of Specialists in Ophthalmology.
- Ask about the surgeon’s experience and case volume with the specific procedure you are considering.
- Check that a thorough pre-operative screening is done, including corneal mapping and measurement of corneal thickness, dry-eye assessment and a stable prescription check.
- Make sure more than one option is discussed, since LASIK, SMILE, surface ablation and ICL each suit different eyes.
- Clarify what after-care and any enhancement (top-up) policy is included.
Understanding the main options
LASIK creates a corneal flap, SMILE removes a small lens-shaped piece of tissue through a smaller incision, and surface ablation reshapes the cornea without a flap, which can suit thinner corneas. ICL involves implanting a lens inside the eye and may suit high prescriptions or corneas unsuitable for laser. The right choice depends on your prescription, corneal thickness, lifestyle and the surgeon’s assessment, not on marketing.
Public versus private care
Refractive surgery is elective and is offered in both the private sector and through the relevant public eye institution. Private clinics typically offer shorter waits and a choice of surgeon, while public options may offer different pricing. In all cases, prioritise the quality of the screening and the surgeon’s experience over price alone.
Costs and financing
LASIK and other refractive procedures are elective and considered cosmetic for financing purposes. They are generally paid out of pocket and are not claimable under MediSave or MediShield Life, and CHAS does not apply. Quoted prices may or may not include the pre-operative assessment, medications and follow-up visits, so ask for an itemised, all-in quotation and check the enhancement policy.

Can I use MediSave for LASIK?
No. Refractive surgery is elective and not claimable under MediSave or MediShield Life. It is paid out of pocket.
Is LASIK permanent?
The corneal reshaping is permanent, but natural age-related changes such as presbyopia and cataract can still affect vision later in life.
What if I am not suitable for LASIK?
A good clinic will say so and may suggest alternatives such as surface ablation or ICL, or advise against surgery if no option is safe for your eyes.
