An ENT specialist (otolaryngologist) manages disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and head and neck — including hearing loss, dizziness, sinus and nasal problems, allergies, snoring and sleep apnoea, voice changes, swallowing difficulty, and neck lumps. Many issues start with a GP, who treats common infections and allergies and refers onward for persistent or one-sided symptoms. See an ENT specialist promptly for hoarseness lasting more than three weeks, a persistent neck lump, one-sided nasal blockage or hearing loss, unexplained ear bleeding, or recurrent severe nosebleeds.
What to look for when choosing an ENT specialist
Confirm the doctor is registered with the Singapore Medical Council and listed on the Register of Specialists in Otorhinolaryngology. ENT covers several sub-focuses, so matching expertise to your problem matters.
- A rhinologist for sinus, nose and allergy concerns.
- An otologist or neuro-otologist for hearing, tinnitus and dizziness.
- A head and neck surgeon for thyroid nodules and neck masses.
- A paediatric ENT for children, or a sleep surgeon for snoring and sleep apnoea.
Ask about hospital affiliation, access to audiology and imaging, and experience with the specific procedure you may need.
Public vs private ENT care
Public hospital ENT departments provide subsidised care through a GP or polyclinic referral, while private clinics offer shorter waits and continuity with one doctor at higher cost. Both are staffed by SMC-registered specialists.
Costs and financing
Surgical ENT procedures done as day surgery or inpatient care are often MediSave-claimable within prevailing limits, and MediShield Life may apply to larger hospital bills. Routine consultations, hearing aids and cosmetic procedures are generally not claimable. Confirm fees and claim eligibility with the clinic before proceeding.

Not for private care, but a GP or polyclinic referral helps with subsidised public-hospital care and initial assessment.
Is a sleep study needed before treating snoring?
