An ENT specialist (otolaryngologist) manages conditions of the ear, nose, throat, and the head and neck. Common reasons to seek one include persistent blocked or runny nose, recurrent sinus infections, nasal allergies, hearing loss, ear infections, tinnitus, dizziness or vertigo, snoring and suspected sleep apnoea, a hoarse voice lasting more than a few weeks, difficulty swallowing, or a neck lump. See an ENT promptly if you notice one-sided nasal blockage or bleeding, sudden hearing loss, persistent ear discharge, or a lump that does not settle, as these may need urgent assessment.

How to choose an ENT clinic in Singapore

Use these checks to weigh up your options:

Confirm the doctor is registered with the Singapore Medical Council and listed on the Register of Specialists in Otorhinolaryngology.
Match the subspecialty to your problem. Rhinology covers sinus and nasal disease, otology and neurotology cover ear and balance, laryngology covers the voice, and head and neck surgery covers tumours of the region.
Ask about hospital affiliation and access to an accredited theatre if surgery, such as endoscopic sinus surgery, may be needed.
Check what diagnostic tools are offered, for example nasoendoscopy, audiology testing and allergy testing.

Public versus private ENT care

Public ENT services at restructured hospitals and the relevant national centres offer subsidised care and multidisciplinary input, usually with a referral and longer waiting times. Private clinics offer shorter waits, continuity with a chosen specialist and more flexible scheduling, at higher fees. A polyclinic or GP referral can help you reach subsidised specialist care.

Costs and financing

Fees vary with the consultation, the tests ordered and whether a procedure is performed in a clinic, day surgery or inpatient setting. For medically necessary treatment, MediSave may help offset approved day-surgery and inpatient costs within set limits, and MediShield Life can apply to larger hospital bills. CHAS subsidies apply at participating GP and dental clinics rather than to specialist ENT fees. Purely cosmetic procedures are not claimable. Always confirm current fees and what is claimable directly with the clinic before proceeding.
