Urologists care for the urinary tract in both sexes and the male reproductive system — kidney stones, urinary tract infections, blood in the urine, an enlarged prostate, incontinence and overactive bladder, as well as cancers of the prostate, kidney and bladder and men’s health concerns. It is worth seeking review for symptoms such as blood in the urine, difficulty or pain passing urine, a weak or frequent stream, recurrent infections, or a lump or persistent pain in the testes. Blood in the urine in particular should always be assessed.
What to look for when choosing a urologist in Singapore
Confirm that the doctor is registered with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) and listed on the Register of Specialists in urology. Beyond that, consider:
- Experience with the specific issue you have, whether stones, prostate disease, cancer or incontinence.
- Familiarity with minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic techniques where these are appropriate.
- Hospital affiliation and access to imaging and day-surgery facilities.
- A clear explanation of treatment options, including watchful waiting where that is reasonable.
Public vs private urology care
Public hospitals offer subsidised, referral-based assessment and surgery, while private clinics offer quicker scheduling and continuity with a chosen specialist. Both routes can handle the full range of urological conditions; for urgent symptoms such as visible blood in the urine, prompt assessment is the priority regardless of setting.
Costs and financing
A consultation and basic tests are modest compared with surgery for stones, the prostate or a urological cancer. MediSave can be used towards approved surgical procedures and hospitalisation within set limits, and MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plans help with larger bills. Some men’s health and elective items may not be claimable. Ask for a written cost estimate and check your coverage before proceeding.
Common questions
What does blood in the urine mean?
It has many causes, from infection or stones to more serious conditions, and always warrants assessment. Do not assume it is harmless even if it settles.
Do I need a referral to see a urologist?
For subsidised public care you usually need a referral. Private urologists may see you directly, but bring any relevant test results.
Is prostate surgery always necessary for an enlarged prostate?
No. Many men are managed with monitoring or medication, with surgery reserved for troublesome or complicated cases. Your urologist will discuss the options.
