What a neurologist treats and when to see one
Neurologists diagnose and manage conditions of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles — migraine and other headaches, epilepsy and seizures, stroke and its after-effects, Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, dementia, vertigo, and peripheral neuropathy. Consider a review for recurrent or unusually severe headaches, unexplained numbness or weakness, tremor, memory problems, blackouts or seizures, or persistent dizziness. Some symptoms are emergencies: sudden face drooping, arm weakness or speech difficulty may signal a stroke and need immediate hospital care, not a clinic appointment.
What to look for when choosing a neurologist in Singapore
Check that the doctor is registered with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) and listed on the Register of Specialists in neurology. Because neurology is broad, fit with your condition matters:
- Subspecialty interest — some neurologists focus on epilepsy, movement disorders, headache, stroke or memory disorders.
- Access to diagnostics such as MRI, CT, EEG and nerve conduction studies.
- Hospital affiliation, which is important for conditions that may need inpatient or surgical input.
- A clear plan for long-term follow-up, since many neurological conditions are managed over years rather than cured in one visit.
Public vs private neurology care
Singapore’s public neuroscience services offer comprehensive, subsidised, team-based care, usually accessed by referral, while private neurologists offer quicker appointments and continuity. For chronic conditions, continuity and access to investigations often matter more than the setting itself.
Costs and financing
Consultations are relatively modest, but investigations such as MRI and ongoing medication add up over time. Common questions
When is a headache a reason to see a neurologist?
Recurrent, worsening or unusually severe headaches, or headaches with new neurological symptoms, deserve assessment. A sudden “worst-ever” headache needs emergency care.
What should I do if I suspect a stroke?
Act immediately. Sudden facial droop, arm weakness or speech difficulty means calling for emergency help — stroke treatment is time-critical and not something to wait on.
Will I need an MRI?
Not always. Whether a scan is needed depends on your symptoms and examination, and your neurologist will explain if and why one is recommended.
