When should my GP refer me to a nephrologist?

Common reasons include persistently reduced kidney function (low eGFR), blood or protein in the urine, hard-to-control high blood pressure, recurrent kidney stones or infections, and kidney issues linked to diabetes. Your GP or polyclinic can refer you to a renal physician for further evaluation.

What is the difference between a nephrologist and a urologist?

A nephrologist (renal physician) manages the medical care of the kidneys, including chronic kidney disease, hypertension, dialysis and transplant follow-up. A urologist is a surgeon who treats structural problems of the urinary tract, such as stones, blockages and prostate or bladder conditions.

Is the doctor a recognised kidney specialist in Singapore?

A qualified kidney specialist should appear on the SMC Specialist Register under Renal Medicine and practise in an MOH-licensed clinic. You can verify a doctor's registration on the Singapore Medical Council's public register before booking.

Do I need a referral to see a private nephrologist?

Many private kidney clinics accept self-referrals, but a referral letter from your GP or polyclinic with recent blood and urine results helps the specialist assess you faster and may be needed for certain insurance or subsidy claims.

Where can I get dialysis if I have kidney failure?

Dialysis is available at public hospitals and at community dialysis providers such as the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and Fresenius Kidney Care, as well as some private centres. Your nephrologist will advise on haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or transplant options and help arrange care.
