What to look for when choosing a fertility clinic in Singapore
Assisted reproduction is closely regulated. Look for a centre licensed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) to provide assisted reproduction services, with treating doctors registered with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) and listed on the Register of Specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology, ideally with subspecialty training in reproductive medicine. Other things worth weighing up:
- Whether you will be seen by the same doctor and embryology team throughout your cycle.
- The range of treatments offered, from ovulation induction and IUI through IVF, ICSI and fertility preservation.
- How the clinic explains success rates — meaningful figures are age-banded and specific to your situation, not a single headline number.
- Counselling and emotional support, which the treatment can demand as much as the medical side.
Public vs private fertility care
Singapore has both public assisted reproduction centres within the restructured hospitals and private fertility clinics. Public centres may involve a referral and waiting time but offer structured, subsidised pathways; private clinics often provide more scheduling flexibility and continuity with a chosen specialist. Either route can deliver good care, so the decision often comes down to cost, waiting time and personal preference.
Costs and financing
Fertility treatment is a significant outlay, and how much help you receive depends on where you are treated. Government co-funding for assisted conception procedures is available to eligible couples at public assisted reproduction centres, and MediSave may be used towards treatment up to set withdrawal limits, with a lifetime cap per patient. The exact subsidy and MediSave rules depend on age, citizenship, the number of cycles and where you are treated, so confirm current figures with the clinic and check your eligibility before committing. Always ask for a written cost estimate covering consultations, medication, the procedure and any genetic testing.
Common questions
How long does one IVF cycle take?
A typical fresh cycle runs over several weeks, from ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval to embryo transfer, followed by a wait before a pregnancy test. Your clinic will give you a personalised timeline.
Can I freeze my eggs for non-medical reasons?
Elective egg freezing is permitted in Singapore under specified conditions, but support such as MediSave is generally limited to medically indicated cases. Ask the clinic to explain eligibility and out-of-pocket costs.
Should both partners be assessed?
Yes. A meaningful fertility work-up evaluates both partners, since a male factor contributes to a substantial proportion of cases.
