What a dermatologist treats and when to see one
A dermatologist is a doctor specialising in conditions of the skin, hair and nails — including eczema, psoriasis, acne, rashes, pigmentation, hair loss and skin cancer. For minor or short-lived skin problems, a GP can often help; see a dermatologist for persistent or worsening rashes, acne that scars, a changing or new mole, a sore that does not heal, or hair loss that concerns you. A changing mole or a non-healing lesion should always be assessed by a doctor rather than a beautician.
What to look for when choosing a dermatologist
Confirm the doctor is registered with the Singapore Medical Council and listed on the Register of Specialists in Dermatology — an important distinction from aesthetic providers who are not dermatologists. Match the sub-focus to your need.

Public vs private dermatology care
Subsidised dermatology care is available at the National Skin Centre and public hospitals through a GP or polyclinic referral, while private clinics offer shorter waits and continuity at higher cost. Both are staffed by SMC-registered specialists.
Costs and financing
Medically necessary treatment may attract subsidies in the public sector, and certain procedures done as day surgery can be MediSave-claimable within prevailing limits. Cosmetic and aesthetic treatments — such as treatments aimed mainly at appearance — are generally not claimable. Confirm fees and what is medically indicated with the clinic before treatment.
